NATURE’S SEAT: Adirondack Chairs
There’s nothing I like better than lounging about outdoors. And if you happen to have a thicket or woods nearby like I do, I’m sure you too love to sit on your favorite Adirondack chair for hours and take in the freshness of nature.
Yes, Adirondack chairs have become synonymous with the American outdoor experience. In this article, we will tell you all about Adirondack chairs, and before you are through, you will be able to make an informed choice of the best buys in this category.
Apart from the numerous sites that cater exclusively to Adirondack chairs, like Stacks and Stacks , there are 2 sites which always have a great selection. They are Amazon and Ebay and you can see here what they have to offer right now:
Of course Ebay has become such a great source for used and new items, we have to also show what is available on ebay at this moment:
Mother of invention
The identifying feature of the Adirondack chair is its back, made of pieces of wood arranged lengthwise. The slatted pattern apart, these chairs also have wide armrests. Their comfort quotient, obviously, is so high that they have become the most preferred seats for decks, patios and outdoors in general. History has it that the first Adirondack chairs were a proof of necessity being the mother of invention —- one Thomas Lee designed them in early 1903 because his family needed outdoor seats while on vacation. Sadly for Lee, a carpenter friend got the patent for these chairs. I have a feeling Lee didn’t mind, because to his family, he was still the inventor and master-craftsman.
All weather
Primarily meant for the outdoors, Adirondack chairs have to be particularly sensitive to changes in the weather. The earliest of these chairs were made from good-quality wood like teak and willow, which are resistant to extreme heat or cold. But wood cannot stand the rains much. Many modern Adirondack chairs are, therefore, made of high-density plastic that can be made to look like wood but isn’t quite. Recycled plastic and corrosion-resistant stainless steel too are used by the manufacturers. But when students build these chairs as part of their school projects, they normally go back to wood.
Spoilt for choice
Given that it is difficult to tinker much with the basic design of these chairs, the mind boggles at the variety of Adirondack chairs available in the market. The most common ones are the straight-legged, slant-backed chairs made of white cedar, oak, cypress or other wood substitutes. And then there are Adirondack rocking chairs, Adirondack folding chairs, Adirondack chairs with ottoman, Adirondack love seats and even recliners and swings. A single chair could be priced as low as $140, but the price can go up to $1,000 depending on the complexities of the design and additional features. There are also several kinds of Adirondack sets, with chairs, tables, ottomans and footrests.
Easy care
Wherever there is some recreation in sight, or plans of an al fresco event, have no doubts, our Adirondack chairs will enjoy pride of place. One of the main reasons behind this is that these chairs are truly no-fuss and low-maintenance. Has your guest’s kid overturned a bowl of dip on the chair? No sweat. Take a swipecloth and wipe it clean with soapy water. Giving your chairs a UV-protection coat of paint and using a water sealant will help keep your Adirondack chairs as good as new when it is time to hand them down to the next generation.
